Meet Robert Saleh Young: The Rising Star In Football Coaching
At just 41 years old, Robert Saleh is one of the most promising young head coaches in the National Football League (NFL). Since being named the head coach of the New York Jets in January 2021, Saleh has earned a reputation as a bold and innovative tactician, known for his ability to incorporate modern analytics and player personnel management into his game-day strategy. But despite his relatively young age, Saleh's entry into coaching was not straightforward, and his rapid rise to prominence is a testament to his dedication and perseverance.
Before joining the Jets, Saleh spent two years as a linebackers coach with the Seattle Seahawks, where he played a key role in helping the team reach Super Bowl XLVIII. However, it was his time as an assistant coach with the Houston Texans, where Saleh refined his skills as a defensive coordinator and developed a passion for strategic game planning that set him on the path to becoming one of the most respected young coaches in the NFL.
Early Life and Education
Robert Saleh was born in Riverside, California, just outside of Los Angeles. His love affair with football began at the age of five, when his father, soldier-turned-coach, Mike Saleh, taught him the fundamentals of the sport. Always an athletic prodigy, Saleh was selected as a standout linebacker and tight end during his high school years at Pacifica High School in Garden Grove, California. He went on to play linebacker at a scholarship at Northern State University, where he earned a degree in business administration.
College Station Days
After graduating college, Robert Saleh embarked on a decade-long stint in the Army, serving as a captain in the United States Army National Guard. Although the exact dates of his enlistment are unknown, Saleh was reportedly honorably discharged in 2003, a feat not unremarkable considering his outspoken views against the exit strategy in Iraq. When he rejoined football coaching, his potential was almost instantaneous, catching on with the Dallas Cowboys as a coaching assistant in the spring of 2010.
