According to Alec Pawlak, music producer and owner of the indie record label Magna Carta Records, Kalamazoo's vibrant music scene is a testament to the city's lively arts community.

"Kalamazoo has this unique energy that is so infectious," says Pawlak. "There's a sense of camaraderie among local musicians and a strong desire to share their music with the world." This atmosphere has led to the establishment of various music festivals, such as the Kalamazoo Folk Festival and the Freephack Fest, which bring together talented artists from across Michigan and beyond.

"Playing music is an essential part of my identity, and I draw inspiration from the natural beauty and resilience of the U.P. people."

Michigan's Rap Scene and Underground Hip Hop

As with any thriving music scene, Detroit is not the only Michigan city giving birth to talented rappers. The underground hip-hop scene in cities like Lansing, East Lansing, and Ann Arbor is home to artists pushing the boundaries of the genre, experimenting with new sounds and voices that connect with their audience. Musicians like A Black Overton, The Weather Boys, and Joshua Eugene and GP — respectively from Lansing, East Lansing, and Ann Arbor — make names for themselves in local circles while drawing attention from the music world at large.
