"Quality of life issues are always our number one priority, and allowing recreational marijuana in Branford fundamentally compromises our community's value system and continues to degrade our municipal reputation," says Fran Ford, a long-time Branford resident.

As with any new business, residents have the right to object by writing to officials, holding public meetings, or finding alternative solutions. The eventual fate of these establishments will largely depend on how residents engage with this issue.

Health agencies at the state and local level continue to explore the impact of marijuana on public health and safety in Connecticut. Connecticut Department of Public Health Commissioner, Manisha Juthanwar, has stated that, while the health risks associated with marijuana are well-documented, more research is needed to effectively address the issues of impaired driving and mental health exposure.

Branford's local commission, the Commission on the Regulation of Cannabis, underwent appointment this past January and February. Local officials appointed include the town's zoning officer, a lawyer and former farmer, and a medical professional.
