Robbie Hummel, a five-time all-Big Ten choice, spent 16 seasons with Purdue from 2007 to 2012 and played professionally for several years afterwards. Hailing from Kokomo, Indiana, Rachel graduated from Indiana University with a degree in Elementary Education in 2006. The two would eventually meet at a church function in West Lafayette, Indiana, with their first date taking place in July of 2010.

As the two began dating seriously, Robbie Hummel's college basketball fame rose in conjunction with their blossoming relationship. In an interview with the Purdue Exponent in 2011, Robbie credited Rachel with keeping him grounded amidst the chaos of his basketball career. "Rachel's been a huge influence on me," he said, "She's just got great values and she's always pushing me to meet higher standards off of the court. She's been a stabilizing presence in my life that I feel like I wouldn't have without her."

Armed with an education and her own unique strengths, Rachel Hummel has proven to be more than just the supportive wife of a basketball great. Unbeknownst to many fans, she has built a quiet but remarkable life as an elementary school teacher, working tirelessly behind the scenes to educate and mold the next generation. Rachel emphasizes the importance of teaching as a calling in an interview with Hoosier Happenings in 2013. "As an elementary school teacher I have truly found my passion. I work with a dedicated group of educators and administrators to provide a quality education to the children in our school. It is a challenging job, but it is also the most rewarding."

When asked for further input on her views on teaching, C president Emma DeMicco reinforced Rachel's assertion on the gratitude and dedication teachers must show. "Educators not only face the daily stressors of getting students prepared in standard areas, such as reading and math, they must also consider a range of mental and physical challenges, including anxiety, ADHD, and obesity."
