WHO WAS ALYSHA DURAN? BODYCAM FOOTAGE OF COLORADO COP FATALLY SHOOTING WOMAN AFTER SHE REACHED FOR GUN RELEASED
The officer involved in the fatal shooting of 19-year-old Alysha Duran in Arvada, Colorado has been identified as a 13-year veteran of the police force. Bodycam footage of the incident has been released, showing the moments leading up to Duran's death, but the city's police department is still reviewing the shooting to ensure it was justified.
The El Paso County Sheriff's Office, which is investigating the incident, has released a statement saying that an outside agency will review the case to ensure the officer followed procedure in shooting the woman after she reached for a firearm in her home on April 29.
The incident has left the community reeling, with many advocating for transparency and more information on the officer's actions. So who was Alysha Duran? And what led up to the tragic shooting? Here's what we know.
THE FACTS OF THE SHOOTING
Alysha Duran was shot and killed by an Arvada Police Officer on April 29 in the early hours of the morning. Her grandmother called 911, reporting a disturbance in her home where they lived together in a mobile home in Arvada, Colorado.
She told the dispatcher that her granddaughter had a gun and was threatening to harm herself.
THE 911 CALL
The dispatcher received the 911 call just after 3:00 a.m. and said the woman on the phone was "weaving in and out of consciousness" as she tried to explain the situation. "She had a gun," the grandmother said. "The gun, go to the, she's got a gun. She thinks there's someone coming, is coming and two shots or have been fired in the past 30 seconds." The grandmother explained that her granddaughter was saying "they have me, they have me," the grandmother says on the 911 call.
"When she said that, it sounded like she might have - possibly might have shot herself, I don't know," the dispatcher responds. The grandmother tries to reassure her but the officer on the scene would later claim that the woman reached for a gun in her backpack, indicating that the grandmother's words were unreliable.
